the-one-room
The One Room — What Fits, What Goes, and Who Decided, When a House Becomes One Room

A house is about to become one room.

Somebody has to decide what goes, and it is almost always the son or the daughter, working from a list the facility emailed and a house with thirty years in it. Almost everyone does it in the wrong order. They start at the house, sort for three weeks, and arrive at the room to find that half of what they kept will not fit through the door.

Start at the room. Everything in The One Room follows from that.

The method: the Room First

Measure the room before you touch a single object at the house. Width, length, ceiling, the doorway, the closet, what is already in there and bolted down, where the outlets are and which wall the bed has to go against.

Get their rules in writing. What the facility supplies, what it forbids, how everything has to be labeled, what will not come up in the elevator — and the name of whoever told you, because the next person may say something different.

Fill the room on paper, at a square to the foot, before anything is promised to anybody. You will be surprised how little goes in. Better to be surprised at the kitchen table than in a hallway with a truck outside.

Then sort the house against that plan. Now every decision has an answer that is not a feeling. It fits or it does not.

What is inside

Eight fill-in worksheets. The room, measured. Their rules, written down. The paper room. A decision log, so that what was decided is decided once and not relitigated in a hallway. Where everything else goes — sold, given, stored, discarded — with the four destinations defined once instead of argued about per object. Who needs the new address, which is not the same list as who needs to know. Day one and week two: what has to be unpacked and reachable the first night, and what can wait.

And one page you do not fill in. You hand it to the facility's move-in coordinator, and they write down what they supply, what they will not allow, and the dates that are actually fixed.

What it will not do

It contains nothing about care, health or medication, and nothing about paying for any of this. It will not tell you what the residency agreement means or what anybody is committing to by signing it — that is a document for an attorney who reads them, and it is worth the hour.

It also assumes two things. That the person moving has agreed to move: if they have not, start there, because a plan is not a way of settling that question and nothing in here reaches it. And that the move is into a facility — a parent moving in with family is a different problem, and this is not that book.

One more thing the book says plainly, on the page where it matters. The decision log records what was decided and when. It is not a record of who owns anything, it does not make a gift of anything, and it is not evidence of anybody's share of anything. If a benefit application is possible, or the estate may be contested, get advice from an elder law attorney before anything of value leaves the house, not after.

Format: 24 pages, US Letter. Print it at home or fill it in on screen. One PDF, instant download, yours to keep and reprint.

Educational use.
